End Injustice For All

Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Isaiah 58:6

Every year on July 4th, Americans gather to celebrate freedom.

We celebrate the blessings that come with living in freedom—the ability to make our own choices, pursue our dreams, worship according to our beliefs, and live without being owned or controlled by another person.

For millions of women and girls around the world, freedom is not something they take for granted. In fact, many have never truly experienced it.

Human trafficking is one of the greatest assaults on human dignity in our world today. Through force, fraud, or coercion, traffickers strip away a person's freedom and exploit them for profit. Women and girls are bought, sold, manipulated, and controlled. They are treated as commodities rather than the beloved image-bearers God created them to be.

While many of us celebrate independence this month, countless women  and girls remain trapped in situations they cannot escape on their own.

At Heart of Mercy Mission, we have the privilege of participating in stories of redemption and restoration. We see women who have come out of trafficking begin the long journey toward healing. We see survivors receive safe housing, education, vocational training, counseling, and spiritual support. We see women discover that they are not forgotten, abandoned, or defined by what has been done to them.

Freedom is more than the absence of bondage. It is the presence of opportunity. It is the ability to make choices. It is the restoration of dignity.

As followers of Christ, we know that God's heart has always been for the oppressed and vulnerable. Throughout Scripture, He calls His people to seek justice, defend the weak, and speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves. The prophet Isaiah describes God's desire "to loose the chains of injustice" and "set the oppressed free" (Isaiah 58:6).

What a beautiful picture of the work being done through ministries that serve trafficking survivors around the world.

This Independence Day, as we celebrate our own freedoms, may we also remember those who are still waiting for theirs. And may we never forget that every woman deserves the opportunity to live in freedom. Together, we can help make freedom more than a holiday we celebrate. We can help make it a reality for someone else.
