“I thank my God every time I remember you.” — Philippians1:3 (NIV)
What are your plans for Thanksgiving this month? Most of us have some idea of how we will be spending the holiday. Family, friends, food. Reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. Even when life is difficult, we can usually find something to be thankful for.
But what if our gratitude could become something more than a feeling? What if it could become a force for change?
For women and children who have escaped human trafficking, thankfulness may look very different from what we typically imagine. It may not be a table overflowing with Thanksgiving dinner. It might be a safe place to sleep, a meal without fear, the opportunity to attend school, or the freedom to make decisions about their own future.
These are things many of us take for granted. Yet for survivors of trafficking, they represent a new beginning.
At Heart of Mercy Mission, we are grateful for our dedicated partners in developing countries who work tirelessly to bring hope and healing to vulnerable women and children. Through rehabilitation, education, and prevention, we help survivors rebuild their lives and protect others from exploitation.
And we're thankful for YOU! Your prayers, generosity, and compassion make this work possible.
As Christian women in media, God has given each of us a voice and a sphere of influence, and we have the opportunity and privilege to use both to make a difference.
Not everyone can travel overseas to help rescue a child or support a woman recovering from exploitation. But everyone can do something.
We can share stories that raise awareness. We can pray for those who are suffering and for those working on the front lines. We can support organizations providing practical assistance. And we can encourage others to become part of the solution.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “You will be enriched in everyway so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:11,NIV)
What a beautiful picture! Our blessings become opportunities for generosity, and our generosity becomes a reason for someone else to give thanks to God.
This November, as we count our blessings, let's also consider how we can be a blessing. Because gratitude isn't just about appreciating what we've received. It's also about sharing what we've been given.
And sometimes, the greatest expression of thankfulness is giving someone else a reason to be thankful.
