Trick or Treat: When the Promise is a Trap

The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor.
    Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others.

Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless.
    Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.
 You will bring justice to the orphans and theoppressed,
    so mere people can no longer terrify them. Psalm 10:2,17-18

We all know the common slogan echoing in stores and streets in October: “Trick or treat!”

For someone vulnerable to human trafficking, the trick can be devastating, and what appears to be a treat can become a dangerous trap.

Traffickers rarely approach potential victims looking like villains. Instead, they often present themselves as someone trustworthy: a boyfriend offering love and affection, a friend promising a better life, or a recruiter offering a wonderful job opportunity.

They are master manipulators who know what a vulnerable person needs or longs for and offer exactly that.

For someone living in poverty or an unstable situation, these promises can seem like an answer to prayer. A job in another city or country might mean the ability to provide food, housing, or education for their family. A new relationship might offer the love and belonging they desperately crave.

But the promised “treat” may hide a terrible trick.

Once trust is established, traffickers use deception, manipulation, threats, debt, isolation, and other forms of coercion to gain control. By the time victims realize what has happened, escaping may be far more complicated and dangerous than simply walking away.

This happens around the world, including in countries whereresources for survivors are scarce.

That is why Heart of Mercy Mission focuses much of its work in developing countries such as Nepal and Albania. The need is tremendous, yet survivors often have far fewer services available to help them heal and rebuild their lives.

Heart of Mercy Mission partners with trusted organizations already serving in these communities to provide boots-on-the-ground prevention and education as well as practical care and support for survivors.
