When Pity is Not Enough

A righteous man knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man does not understand such knowledge. Proverbs 29:7

God never intended righteousness to be a passive state of mind; He designed it to include a relentless pursuit of justice. This is the unsettling truth behind Proverbs29:7: “A righteous man [and woman] knows the rights of the poor; a wicked man[and woman] does not understand such knowledge.”

Being righteous is a gift from God, but it also includes an active expression. Most of us want to do the right thing in God’s eyes—we want to be wise and knowledgeable. Across different translations of this verse, the words used for "knows" are convicting: cares, considers, acknowledges, understands. They all imply a personal responsibility. What Scripture makes clear is that, in God's eyes, ignorance or apathy toward the vulnerable isn't just a passive trait—it's a moral failure.

Throughout the Bible, and vividly in the Gospels, we see that Jesus prioritized human dignity over rigid rules, often confronting those who put heavy burdens on susceptible people, doing nothing to help them.

At its heart, righteousness describes our alignment with God’s character, while justice is how that alignment translates into practice.

The truth is, we cannot claim righteousness while ignoring injustice; true righteousness includes pursuing justice. They are inseparable. Righteousness and justice form the foundation of God’s throne (Psalm 89:14). Scripture presents them as paired together.

God desires much more from us than mere empathy or sympathy. The "rights of the poor" refers to legal rights. We have a responsibility to understand the law towards those who are poor, vulnerable, and abused. We must stand up for them as we would want to receive justice ourselves. We may not all step into a court of law to do this, but we do have our vote and we hold civic influence. We can—and must—ensure that the legislation we vote on is fair for those who are abused and vulnerable. True righteousness means doing the work of justice today.
